Soccer Players Take Part in Milwaukee SCORES Reading Program
March 5, 2007 WAUWATOSA, Wis. - Photo Gallery from the Milwaukee SCORES program. Four Marquette soccer players took part in the Milwaukee SCORES program reading to children at Build-a-Bear Workshop in Mayfair Mall. The four players taking part in the program were Dan Addis, Nick Kay and Duncan Silvert-Noftle from the men's team and Kate Sternke from the women's team. Milwaukee SCORES is a part of the nationally recognized program America SCORES. Across the nation students read The Cat In the Hat at March 2 observance of the birthday of Dr. Seuss' birthday. The reading began at exactly 2:36 p.m., as there are 236 words in The Cat In the Hat. The players read The Cat In the Hat to area students, which came from three Milwaukee Public Schools -- James Whitcomb Riley Elementary, Hayes Bilingual Elementary and Windlake Elementary. Following the reading, the MU soccer players interacted with local school kids and signed autographs. Following the appearance, several of the elementary students read poetry that they had written to the players. The Milwaukee SCORES mission empowers students in urban communities using soccer, writing, creative expression and service-learning. With teamwork as the unifying value, Milwaukee SCORES inspires youth to lead healthy lifestyles, be engaged students, and become agents of change in their communities. Milwaukee SCORES is an affiliate of America SCORES, the nation's largest inner-city soccer and literacy program.
