The Marquette men's and women's soccer programs will be holding two camps for local women 18 or over (with or without children) with an emphasis on participation, camaraderie and the battle against breast cancer. "The Marquette University Soccer Mom Camp, benefiting breast cancer research is a win-win for all involved in the event. Personally I have a sister who is a breast cancer survivor and some other very good friends who are battling breast cancer at the moment so I am eager for this event to be first class and to raise some good money for the cause," Associate Head Coach Stan Anderson said. Beginning April 27, two separate camps -- a one-night camp and a four-night camp -- will offer area women the opportunity to learn soccer skills from the Marquette coaching staffs while contributing to a great cause. The one-night camp on April 27 is designed for the busy women and will be held from 6-8 p.m. at Valley Fields. The camp will include various activities ranging from non-soccer aerobics to a soccer clinic and tournament. Participants will receive a t-shirt, be able to interact with the Marquette coaches and players and have the opportunity to win great prizes, including spa certificates. Cost for this camp is $50. A once-a-week camp also gets underway on April 27 and runs each Friday through May 25 from 6-8 p.m. at Valley Fields. Like the one-night camp, participants will have the opportunity to participate in soccer and non-soccer activities. This camp will allow participants to develop soccer skills over the course of the session and participants will be able to show off those skills on the final night -- game night -- which will feature a cookout and a tournament in a game-like setting. Children are welcome to each of the four sessions in May and activities will be provided for entertainment. Price for the five-session camp is $135. "This camp is going to be a great time, it is unique and the response has been unreal," Anderson said. "Kudos to (assistant coach) Khaled El-Ahmad, EC Miracles and his staff of volunteers who have done a fantastic job organizing this festival. Not only will the ladies be able to play and have a good time but they will be able to bring their kids. Then entire soccer program -- both the men and women -- will be involved as our players will not only help the ladies play but will also coach and tutor their kids when they are on site." Entry deadline is April 10. The camp proceeds will benefit Kicks Against Breast Cancer. Landon Donovan is the organization's spokesperson. "Thanks to Landon Donovan for donating a US National Team autographed jersey for the Soccer Mom Camp," Anderson added. "He has simply been more than helpful when we asked him to become involved."
