Golden Eagles Earn 2-1 Win at Wis.-Milwaukee in Spring Action
April 25, 2006 MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette men's soccer team picked up a 2-1 victory over Wis.-Milwaukee in a Spring match across town at Englemann Field. The game between the two Milwaukee schools was the first Bob Summy Memorial match. Summy, who passed away tragically in an accident this past Fall, was a friend of MU head coach Louis Bennett and associate head coach Stan Anderson during their tenure at UWM. The Panthers got on the scoreboard first in the 25th minute, on a redirected kick that found the back of the net, past MU goalkeeper Marc Dettmann. But in the second half, it was all Golden Eagles. Nick Kay tallied two goals in the second frame, propelling MU to victory. The equalizer came in the 50th minute, as Aleksandar Bjelic found Kay in the box. Rob Walton set up the gamewinner in the 72nd minute. "It was a very nice win for the program and a good outing." said Anderson. "Spring games are what they are, but we continued to show improvement and growth. It was easily our most competitive match of the Spring." It also marked a return for Louis Bennett and his coaching staff to Wis.-Milwaukee, where the native of Great Britain had served as head coach for 10 seasons. "We were able to score some goals and make some opportunities out there." said Anderson. "UWM is not an easy place to go into and win. We had a good focus throughout the match." The Golden Eagles close out their 2006 Spring slate on Saturday, April 29, when they travel to Kenosha to face Northwestern (11:35 a.m.) and Wis.-Parkside (1:00 p.m.).
