Marquette Soccer Signs Manuel Cukaj

April 28, 2017

MILWAUKEE -- Head coach Louis Bennett and the Marquette University men's soccer program have announced the addition of Manuel Cukaj, a centerback from Mannheim, Germany. Cukaj will join the program this summer with all four years of eligibility remaining.

Cukaj is the fifth Marquette recruit announced by Bennett and his staff so far this spring. He comes to Milwaukee following time spent working his way through the U18 and U23 levels in the Bundesliga youth professional league. The 6-foot-1 centerback will provide a high-energy, advanced approach to the Golden Eagle backline.

"He's ambitious with a great pedigree of soccer and a lot of youth professional experience in Germany," Bennett said. "He spent many years in top-level U18 and U23 Bundesliga professional youth programs and will be able to provide some height, energy and stability as a traditional centerback."

Bennett is expecting the new additions to solidify the backline following the departure of a pair of veteran backs, John Pothast, to graduation and Danny Jarosz, to his new role as student assistant coach.

"He is definitely another recognizable defender -- quick, aggressive and fast," Bennett said of Cukaj. "He's a great fit who defines a prototypical Marquette center back and we're hoping for a good partnership between him and [incoming recruit] Brendan Skinner."
