Marquette Claims 2012 Wisconsin DI Spring Cup
April 29, 2012
MILWAUKEE -- Bryan Ciesiulka scored four goals on the day and Marquette University claimed the 2012 Wisconsin DI Spring Cup with quality wins Sunday over Milwaukee and Green Bay in the final weekend of the exhibition season at Valley Fields.
"We are playing really good soccer and we took a step in the right direction this spring," said Ciesiulka. "This spring, for me, I was trying to become more dangerous by putting myself in positions to score and get assists."
Ciesiulka found the back of the net twice, including penatly kick, in the first half of the Golden Eagles' 5-1 win in their opening match over Milwaukee. Kelmend Islami volleyed a bicycle cross from Dennis Holowaty past the Panthers' keeper for MU's third goal of the half.
Green Bay advanced to the championship match with a 2-1 win over Wisconsin in the other early contest.
Action picked up following a scoreless first half as the Golden Eagles offense began to exploit the Phoenix in the second stanza. Anthony Selvaggi drew a penalty when he was taken down in the box in the 54th minute and Ciesiulka converted as MU took a 1-0 lead.
"We started playing the ball through our valuable people and we started scoring more goals," said head coach Louis Bennett.
Ciesiulka then scored on a diving header off a cross by Selvaggi to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 cushion while redshirt goalkeeper Charlie Lyon preserved the clean sheet.
"Overall, we had a really good weekend," said Bennett. "We want to play a certain style and while we are trying to get that style, we can't forget that we have to compete. I really like the fact that we are competing and when teams tried to press us, we stood our ground and played the ball out of the back. I like where we are with this squad."
In consolation action, Wisconsin defeated the Panthers 2-1.
