Marquette Soccer Adds Three to 2018 Recruiting Class
May 7, 2018
MILWAUKEE – Head coach Louis Bennett and his staff have announced three new signees to the 2018 Marquette University men’s soccer roster as goalkeepers Cedrik Stern and Jackson Weyman, as well as striker AJ Franklin join the program. All are set to enroll in the fall and have four years of eligibility remaining.
“Cedrik, Jackson and AJ add considerable strength and depth to our roster,” Bennett said. “It’s a strong group and adds to our balanced and competitive class, which includes the four early arrivals who have acquired a great deal of seasoning after a quality spring. We’ve emphasized our style and brand and the new guys have really bought in.”
Stern, Weyman and Franklin join a 2018 recruiting class that includes: Alex Mirsberger, Gabe Kash, Alec Wons, and transfers Oliver Posarelli and Leo Villa. Additionally, freshmen Lukas Sunesson and Alan Salmeron, as well as Pitt transfer Josh Coan, and Villa, were all integrated immediately during the spring season as January enrollees.
Marquette recently concluded a highly successful spring campaign where it went 6-0-1 overall with a goal differential of +18 (23-5).
Cedrik Stern | Goalkeeper | Freidberg, Germany
Comments from Coach Bennett: “Cedrik has the resume and experience of the highest quality as an incoming freshman. He’s a goalkeeper that we feel is going to be able to play the style that we play as he’s good with his feet and possesses great communication skills. He’s always played at the top level in Germany.
“His wealth of experience is highlighted by having been called up to the German National Team at age 16. That, along with his experience with a professional academy and youth teams is very valuable to him and us. We’re at a time when we need strength and depth at the goalkeeper position and now we’re going to have some quality goalkeepers training, competing and performing.”
Jackson Weyman | Goalkeeper | Evanston, Ill.
Comments from Coach Bennett: “Jackson has been a valuable member of the Chicago Fire Academy program. Having MLS Academy experience, he knows what it takes to be part of a team and knows what it takes to train hard every day and work for an opportunity. He comes at the right time and rounds out our goalkeeper squad.”
AJ Franklin | Forward | Streamwood, Ill.
Comments from Coach Bennett: “AJ is one of those rare people in this age of specialization who was a multi-sport athlete, having competed in soccer and basketball. In some ways, people think that may inhibit him, but we enjoy that fact. He’s very athletic and taller, which gives us an advantage, and he’s left-footed. He’s going to join an experienced front line, giving us strength and depth.”
