Marquette Soccer Alumnus C Nortey Signs Pro Contract
June 2, 2016
MILWAUKEE - Marquette Soccer alumnus C Nortey has signed his first professional contract to play for one of Denmark's historic clubs, Akademisk Boldklub, of the Danish 1st Division.
The former Marquette forward will begin training with AB - located just outside of Copenhagen - right away, joining a club that was recently promoted from the Danish 2nd Division.
"It feels good. Has definitely been a long time coming," said Nortey of his recent contract. "There are a lot of people responsible for my success. The Dickinson family, Coach (Louis) Bennett, Coach (Steve) Bode, Coach (Marcelo) Santos, (former trainer) Lauren (Falk), my teammates at Marquette and all the rest of the Marquette family."
"Even though it took some time, I knew he would eventually be a professional soccer player as well as a graduate of Marquette University. I'm so proud," Marquette head coach Louis Bennett said. "He's a hard-worker and after what he was able to do at Marquette, it's hugely important for him to get where he needs to go."
Nortey finished his career as Marquette's sixth all-time leading scorer with 69 career points on 30 goals and nine assists. He also tied the school-record for the most game-winning goals (8) all-time.
The Accra, Ghana native attended The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut upon the move from his native country as part of the Right to Dream Academy - an organization that offers children in Africa the opportunity to "reach their true potential" through sport and education.
He is currently one of a handful of Marquette alumni currently playing professional soccer worldwide. Nortey joins the likes of Axel Sjoberg (Colorado Rapids - MLS), Charlie Lyon (Seattle Sounders - MLS), Calum Mallace (Montreal Impact - MLS) and Matt Pyzdrowski (Helsingborgs IF - Allsvenskan - Sweden).
