Women’s soccer reports for the fall
The women’s soccer team reported to campus on Tuesday, Aug. 1 for orientation and will train downtown until it leaves for Camp Whitcomb on Sunday afternoon to continue preseason training. The squad is celebrating its 25th anniversary season in 2017 and six-time conference coach of the year Markus Roeders will look to defend Marquette’s regular season BIG EAST crown this fall. The Golden Eagles will play a scrimmage at Wisconsin on Thursday, Aug. 10 before opening the regular season against No. 2 Stanford at Valley Fields on Friday, Aug. 18.
Both men's soccer and women's volleyball both report early this coming week.
Soccer Fan Fest slated for Friday, Aug. 11
The men’s and women’s soccer teams will host their annual Fan Fest at Valley Fields on Friday, Aug. 11 at 5:30 p.m. prior to a men’s intra-squad scrimmage at 7 p.m. The event will feature skill stations, free Qdoba along with the men’s scrimmage and a short women’s scrimmage during the men’s intermission.
Marquette to feature prominently in MLL Playoffs
B.J. Grill and the defending MLL Champion Denver Outlaws have secured home field advantage for the Major League Lacrosse Playoffs, while his former roommate Liam Byrnes and the Florida Launch have also qualified for the postseason, which begins semifinal action on Aug. 12. The final spot will come down to one of three teams, all of whom have Marquette ties. Conor Gately, Ryan McNamara and the Rochester Rattlers can secure their spot with a win Saturday over the Ohio Machine. If the Rattlers lose, the winner of the game between Jacob Richard’s New York Lizards and Ryan Brown’s Charlotte Hounds will play in the semifinals.
192 named to BIG EAST All-Academic Team
Nearly 200 Marquette University student-athletes were named to the 2016-17 BIG EAST All-Academic Team, the BIG EAST Conference announced Wednesday morning. The women’s soccer team’s 26 representatives led the way for the 192 Golden Eagles to earn the honor, while the men’s tennis team had the highest percentage of its roster with 10 of its 11 student-athletes listed. The men’s cross country team, which had 84 percent (16 of 19) of its roster earn recognition, led all Marquette squads with a cumulative spring GPA of 3.62, while the women’s cross country team posted an MU-high fall GPA of 3.44.
In total, Marquette had 18 student-athletes post perfect 4.0 grade-point averages during the fall semester and 20 do the same in the spring, led by an MU-high eight women’s soccer players.
Rosenthal and Barber named to All-BIG EAST Preseason Volleyball Team
Jenna Rosenthal and Allie Barber have been named to the 2017 preseason All-BIG EAST team, while the Golden Eagles ranked third in the preseason coaches' poll, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Rosenthal was a unanimous selection and was named to the All-BIG EAST first team and AVCA All-East Coast Region squad a year ago. She racked up 278 kills and 148 blocks in last season's action and spent the summer playing with the U.S. Collegiate National Team that won a gold medal in the 13th annual European Global Challenge. Barber was last season's Co-BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and selected to the first team All-BIG EAST squad after averaging 1.99 kills and hitting a .283 clip. The sophomore also averaged 0.51 blocks per set.
Roeders makes opening cut for Timbersports Collegiate Championship at German Fest
Marquette women’s soccer head coach and Idstedt, Germany-native Markus Roeders made the opening cut for the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Championship at German Fest on Sunday afternoon to officially kick off the event. The championship will air on ABC sometime this fall.
