Bennett II Signs Pro Deal with Cypriot League Club
Aug. 12, 2016
MILWAUKEE – Marquette University men’s soccer senior Louis Bennett II has signed a three-year contract with professional club Anorthosis Famagusta FC of the Cypriot First Division and forgoes his final year of collegiate eligibility with the Golden Eagles.
Bennett II, who needs just a handful of credits to complete his degree in communications, is still on track to graduate during the 2016-17 academic year. The Shorewood, Wisconsin native concludes his MU playing career with 32 points on nine goals and 14 assists in 55 career appearances, including 53 starts.
He was a three-time All-BIG EAST performer and two-time NSCAA All-Region team selection. Bennett II was a part of Marquette’s most successful era as a program, debuting as a freshman in 2013 and appearing in every game for the Golden Eagles, who won the BIG EAST championship and beat No. 7 Akron on the way to the program’s first-ever Sweet Sixteen appearance.
“When someone commits to play for Marquette, our job (as a coaching staff) is provide opportunities to prepare them to be successful and happy in future endeavors, whatever they may be,” said his father and Marquette head coach Louis Bennett. “As long as their degree is in their focus and attainable, I have to support and encourage them to take advantage of all opportunities to establish new goals and chase new dreams as college is a spring board to the future.
“In this case, his Marquette experience has afforded him this kind of opportunity and, even though I’m sad to see him go, I’m happy that he is able to achieve his boyhood dream, while also achieving his goal of earning a Marquette degree.”
Bennett II’s agreement with Anorthosis Famagusta FC is a three-year deal that has the American attacking midfielder joining the 20-man first team roster under dual USA/UK citizenship. The club, located in Larnaca, Cyprus and founded in 1911, is the oldest club and one of the most successful in the Cypriot League. The club has a history of providing good opportunities for young players by developing them and eventually selling to high profile clubs and leagues.
Anorthosis Famagusta FC has won 13 First Division titles, 10 Cypriot Cups and seven Super Cups. In 2008-09, it qualified for the Champions League - participating in the group stages - and was also a consistent player in the Europa League, qualifying for three straight years following the 2012-13 season.
Bennett II is the most recent Marquette signee to earn a professional contract overseas, joining 2015 alumnus C. Nortey (Akademisk Boldklub/Denmark), 2010 graduate Matt Pyzdrowski (Helsingborgs IF/Sweden) and former recruit Andrija Novakovic (Reading FC/England), who signed prior to his 2014 freshman season.
