Men's Soccer Tied Atop BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll

Axel Sjoberg was named the conference's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year

Aug. 19, 2014

MILWAUKEE - The defending BIG EAST champion Marquette University men's soccer team received four of 10 first-place votes in the BIG EAST Coaches' Preseason Poll and tied Georgetown for the top spot, the league announced Tuesday.

Both the Golden Eagles and Georgetown were tied with 75 points, while the Hoyas garnered five first-place votes to Marquette's four. Creighton, which was picked to finish third, received the final first-place vote.

Redshirt junior Axel Sjoberg was pegged as the conference's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and was one of four players unanimously selected to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. A two time All-BIG EAST performer, the 6-foot-7 Swedish defender was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team in 2013 and the Second Team in 2012.

Redshirt junior C. Nortey also was a unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST selection, following a 2013 campaign in which the Ghanaian striker was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. Nortey, Marquette's active leader in career goals with 19, was also unanimously selected to the All-BIG EAST Rookie Team in 2011, but redshirted the 2012 season.

Sophomore midfielder Louis Bennett II was the final Golden Eagle named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Bennett, whose 13 points (four goals, five assists) were second-best on the team last season, was one of two unanimous selections to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team in 2013.

Only Georgetown, which placed four players on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, had more representatives than Marquette's three.

The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 12 nationally in the NSCAA preseason rankings, play two more exhibitions against Ohio State and Wright State next Friday, Aug. 22, and Sunday, Aug. 24, before officially beginning their 50th anniversary season.

They will kick off the regular season against defending national champion Notre Dame in Bloomington, Indiana, at 4 p.m. CST on Friday, Aug. 29.
