Marquette Heads to UIC for 2011 Season Opener
Aug. 26, 2011
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's soccer team will travel to Chicago, Ill. for its 2011 season opener against UIC Saturday evening. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Flames Field.
Marquette head coach, Louis Bennett, realizes that the matchup with Flames will be a good test to begin the 2011 campaign."They went to the Elite Eight [of the NCAA Tournament] and that was only three years ago. They have one or two people who were part of that program, so they know how to win."
UIC was picked fourth in the 2011 Horizon League preseason polls. The Flames are led by senior Eric Frazier who tallied 16 points in the 2010 season. UIC finished last season with a record of 7-11-0, while the Golden Eagles tallied a 7-8-4 overall mark.
In its preseason exhibition matches, Marquette outscored its opponents 8-1.
Live updated stats will be provided on GoMarquette.com and a live stream of the game's action will be available on WMUR Marquette Radio.
Marquette makes its first trip back to rowdy Flames Field for the first time since a 3-1 setback to UIC in 2007. MU owns a 4-3-1 all-time record against the Flames. While the series dates back to 1964, these two teams last met in 2008 at Valley Fields, resulting in a 1-0 UIC victory.
Saturday's match at UIC marks the 2011 season opener for the Marquette Golden Eagles under sixth-year head coach Louis Bennett.
MU posted its best record under Louis Bennett in 2010 with 7-8-4 overall mark and finished sixth in the BIG EAST Blue Division (3-4-2).
The Golden Eagles open 2011 coming off their first-ever BIG EAST Championship semifinals appearance. MU earned its second straight trip to the conference tournament in 2010, eliminating reigning BIG EAST tourney champion St. John's, 3-1, in opening-round action in Queens, N.Y.
For the second consecutive season Marquette returns 17 letterwinners and eight starting players, including 2010 All-BIG EAST Second Team selection Calum Mallace. Twenty three of the 27 players on the 2011 roster were on the squad dating back to this past spring.
Head coach Sean Phillips begins his second season with the UIC Flames on Saturday. The Indiana grad guided UIC to a 7-11-0 record in 2010 and seventh-place finish in the Horizon League (3-5-0) after taking over for coach John Trask who had left UIC to accept the same position with MU's in-state rival the Wisconsin Badgers.
Four-time Horizon League champion UIC is led by 6-foot-0 senior Eric Frazier. The Flower Mound, Texas, native was second on the Flames last season in scoring with 16 points on six goals and four assists behind Derek Huffman (18 pts, 8g, 2a). Frazier was the only UIC player to see action in all 18 games in 2010.
