Aug. 27, 2012
MILWAUKEE - Marquette University junior Eric Pothast collected multiple honors Monday for his efforts in a pair of men's soccer victories over the weekend. Pothast had a hand in both of the Golden Eagles' game-winning goals as the squad opened the season 2-0-0 for the first time in over a decade.
A 6-foot-3 defender from Lake Zurich, Ill., Pothast was named to the BIG EAST Conference weekly honor roll, the league office announced Monday afternoon. In addition, the MU co-captain was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week and also garnered College Sports Madness BIG EAST Player of the Week accolades.
Pothast, who played the entire 180 minutes in the team's two matches, assisted teammate Sebastian Jansson on the Golden Eagles' thrilling game-winning goal as time expired Friday to down the Milwaukee Panthers 3-2 at Valley Fields to reclaim the Milwaukee Cup trophy.
On Sunday, Pothast scored the decisive goal (30'), and he helped the Marquette defensive unit earn its first shutout of the season in a 1-0 win at Green Bay. It was Pothast's first collegiate game-winning goal as MU snapped Green Bay's eight-game home field winning streak dating back to last season.
