Men's Soccer Looks To Continue Win Streak Saturday
Sept. 11, 2014
MU is on a two-match winning streak after claiming the Milwaukee Panther Invitational title last weekend by defeating Gonzaga, 2-0 and Oregon State, 1-0. All-America candidate Charlie Lyon recorded his first two clean sheets of the season and is just six away from tying the all-time program record (Jim Welch, 28). Redshirt junior David Selvaggi scored the game-winning goal off of a penalty kick in the fourth minute against Oregon State and goals from redshirt freshmen Daniel Szczepanek and Alex McBride led MU past Gonzaga.
MU owns a 7-2-1 all-time advantage over Drake in a series that began in 1988. MU has played Drake in each of the previous two seasons and have out-scored the Bulldogs by a combined margin of 6-1 in those two matches. The Golden Eagles earned a 2-0 shutout in Des Moines back in 2012 and picked up a 4-1 victory last season at Engelmann Field as part of the Milwaukee Panther Invitational. In 2009, Drake defeated MU 2-0 in the regular season and later advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Drake held MU scoreless (W, 1-0) its last visit to Valley Fields on Oct. 3, 2007.
Saturday's contest against Drake will also be the first match in which transfer Luis Trude is eligible to suit up for the Golden Eagles. Per NCAA transfer rules, Trude had to sit the first four matches of the season. Trude joins MU with one year of eligibility remaining after graduating from and playing three seasons at William Carey University, where he tallied 33 assists and 17 goals in 33 career matches. Trude will pursue his Masters of Business Administration at MU. The men's soccer squad is looking to build on its 2-0-0 record at Valley Fields this season.
At the conclusion of Saturday's match, there will be a ring ceremony to commemorate the 2013 Marquette men's soccer team and its historic season. Last fall, MU captured its second regular-season title in three seasons and hoisted the BIG EAST tournament championship trophy at PPL Park for the first time in program history.
