Pothast Lands Spot on BIG EAST Men's Soccer Honor Roll
Sept. 16, 2013
MILWAUKEE - Marquette University senior co-captain Eric Pothast was named to the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Weekly Honor Roll, the league announced today, for his role in the Golden Eagles' 1-0 road victory at Michigan this past Friday.
Pothast, a central defender from Lake Zurich, Ill., scored on a volley inside the six-yard box with 58 seconds remaining in regulation to put the Golden Eagles ahead. It was his team-best fifth career game-winner and also marked the second shutout of the season for Marquette, which was led by a strong defensive effort by the backline.
MU teammate Axel Sjoberg was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll last week, as the two center backs have now been honored in back-to-back weeks by the conference. Sjoberg assisted on Pothast's game-winning goal against the Wolverines, in addition to freshman defender Jake Taylor.
Marquette's backline had combined for 14 points on four goals and six assists through the team's first five matches of the season.
Pothast has played every minute of all six matches in 2013, helping the Golden Eagles to a 3-2-1 overall record. He is also the team's active team leader in career starts (59).
