Official BIG EAST Release

NEW YORK – Marquette University midfielder Luka Prpa has been named BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week for the second time in three weeks and third time this season after his two-goal effort in a win over Xavier on Saturday, the league office announced on Monday.

Prpa scored his seventh and eighth goals of the season in Saturday’s big win over the Musketeers. He drew a handball in the penalty area in the 10th minute and proceeded to convert the PK to give Marquette a 1-0 lead. Then in the 18th minute, the Wind Lake, Wisconsin native finished a cross from redshirt junior Daniel Szczepanek to make it 2-0.

The Golden Eagles would go on to win 4-1 and rekindled their BIG EAST tournament hopes in the process. Currently, Prpa leads Marquette with 22 points on eight goals and six assists on the year, which also ranks tied for second in the conference behind Butler’s David Goldsmith, who has 23 points on 10 goals and three assists.

Prpa earned another significant award on Monday as well, reeling in his second College Soccer News Team of the Week honor on Monday. His first BIG EAST Freshman of the Week accolade came back on Sept. 5 after back-to-back six-point performances following wins over Northern Illinois and UIC. He then capitalized on the award again after scoring the game-tying goal against Georgetown back on Oct. 8.

Also receiving recognition by the BIG EAST was sophomore goalkeeper Luis Barraza and Szczepanek. Both were named to the Weekly Honor Roll after superb performances in their own right. Barraza matched a career-high with nine saves to earn the win over Xavier, while Szczepanek tied a career-mark with four points on a goal and two assists.

Marquette is in action this week for its final two road matches of the regular season, taking on Providence on Wednesday, Oct. 26, followed by a match-up at Butler on Saturday, Oct. 29.
