Oct. 30, 2014
MILWAUKEE -- Two members of the Marquette University men's soccer team have been named to the 11-person Capital One Academic All-District 6 Men's Soccer Team, it was announced Thursday.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Charlie Lyon (St. Charles, Illinois) and redshirt junior central defender Axel Sjoberg (Stockholm, Sweden) received the recognition. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have appeared in at least half of the team's contests and maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average.
Lyon, the 2013-14 BIG EAST Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, boasts a 3.89 grade point average as a biomedical sciences major on the pre-medicine track and Sjoberg has a 3.90 GPA in finance.
Lyon was the 2013 BIG EAST Co-Goalkeeper of the Year and is tied for the program record in career shutouts with 28. Sjoberg is the 2014 BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and has been tabbed the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week twice in 2014. Both student-athletes have played every minute of action for the Golden Eagles this fall.
This is the third time that Lyon has been honored, while Sjoberg earns his second academic all-district award.
Both student-athletes will now be placed on the Capital One Academic All-America ballot, which will be voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of the America (CoSIDA) and announced in late November.
