Three Golden Eagles Named Capital One/Academic All-District

MILWAUKEE - Three members of the Marquette University men's soccer team have been named to the eight-person Capital One Academic All-District VI Men's Soccer Team it was announced Thursday. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Charlie Lyon along with junior midfielders Eric Pothast and Bryan Ciesiulka received the recognition.
Lyon, Ciesiulka and Pothast will now be placed on the Academic All-America ballot, which will be voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and announced later this month. It is the first all-district honor for the three Golden Eagles.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have appeared in at least half a team's contests and maintain at least a 3.30 grade point average.
Lyon recently matched Marquette's single-season shutout record with his 10th clean sheet of the season in a 3-0 win over Cincinnati in the first round of the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship on Wednesday night. Lyon holds a 3.8 GPA and majors in Biomedical Sciences.
Ciesiulka, who is dual major in Mathematics and Education (3.8 GPA), is leads one of the nation's most potent offenses with a team-high eight assists, including four goals this season. He is currently ranks second among active MU players with 30 career points on eight goals and 14 assists over the past three seasons.
A Marketing major, Pothast has a cumulative GPA of 3.6 and has started every match this season for the Golden Eagles at defensive midfield after starting the previous two years at central defender. Pothast scored the game-winning goal in three of MU's first four games to begin the 2012 campaign.
No. 10/7 Marquette (15-2-1) won its first 12 games of the 2012 season, which was the nation's longest regular-season winning streak, and has been ranked as high as No. 2 in the national polls this season.
