Golden Eagles Defeat UIC, 1-0, in First Spring Match

MILWAUKEE -

Sophomore Chris Madsen was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week ending on Nov. 1, following a hat trick and assist against Pittsburgh Saturday night. The win clinched the No. 6 spot in the Blue Division of the BIG EAST Tournament for Marquette, the first postseason berth since the 2002 season.

Madsen's seven points on the night tied the Valley Fields single-game record for points scored by a Marquette player, and his three goals tied the individual record by a Marquette player at Valley Fields.

His first goal, the eventual game-winner, came at the 3:01 mark when the sophomore received a serve from freshman Ryan Robb from 40 yards out, settled the pass, and shot the ball from 15 yards out into the far side of the net. The goal was the earliest tally of the season for MU.

Madsen added to his night in the 18th minute as a cross from Anthony Colaizzi found the head of Madsen, who found the back of the net with a header from eight yards.

He paused his scoring effort momentarily, assisting sophomore Amilcar Herrera's goal in the 31st minute. Madsen headed a loose ball forward into the box, and Herrera finished to the far post from the corner of the six-yard box.

Madsen's hat trick put Marquette ahead, 4-0, as he tied both Valley Fields records. At the 64:58 mark, Madsen collected a pass from Colaizzi, beat the keeper to the ball, and forced freshman goalkeeper Keegan Gunderson to deflect the ball into the net.

The Brookfield, Wis. native entered the game against Pittsburgh with two points on a goal against DePaul. His .750 shot percentage is tops on the team for players with more than one shot, and his .500 shot percentage leads all Golden Eagles. After not seeing any game action as a freshman, Madsen has played 502 minutes in 12 games, including three starting nods.
