Marquette Men's Soccer Team Faces Off Against the Reigning BIG EAST Tournament Champion, St. John's

MILWAUKEE- The Marquette University men's soccer team will travel to Queens, N.Y. on Wednesday to take on the reigning BIG EAST tournament champion, St. John's Red Storm, in the first round of this year's BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship.

The Golden Eagles (6-7-4, 3-4-2 BIG EAST) secured the No. 6 seed in the Blue Division with a 3-2 overtime victory over Seton Hall and earned a match-up with the No. 3 seed of the Red Division, St. John's (10-5-2, 4-3-2 BIG EAST).

The winner will go on to face No. 2 Blue seed Notre Dame on Saturday, Nov. 6 in Notre Dame, Ind.

• Marquette advances to its second straight BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship appearance by virtue of earning the No. 6 seed in the Blue Division with 11 points in league play this season.

• Wednesday’s winner between St. John’s (No. 3 Red) and Marquette (No. 6 Blue) will advance to the quarterfinals to face Notre Dame (No. 2 Blue) this Saturday, Nov. 6, in Notre Dame, Ind.

• MU is 0-1 all-time in the BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship, falling to USF in the opening round last season by a final tally of 2-1 in Tampa, Fla.

• The Golden Eagles are coming off a 3-2 overtime victory over Seton Hall this past Saturday at Valley Fields, which snapped a three-game losing streak for MU ... It was head coach Louis Bennett’s third conference win of the season, the most league victories for a Marquette (3-4-2) squad since joining the BIG EAST Conference in 2005.

• St. John’s is the reigning BIG EAST tournament champion and has won a league best eight tournament titles ... The Red Storm finished the regular season in third place in the Red Division standings with a record of 4-3-2 and 14 points in league play.

• Led by head coach Dave Masur, the Red Storm are coming off back-to-back wins to conclude the regular season and are unbeaten in their last six matches.

• Goalkeeper Rafael Diaz, a redshirt freshman, has posted six straight shutouts and has not allowed a goal in his last 615:00 minutes between the posts.

• Marquette is making its first appearance at Belson Stadium since 2005, its first year as a member of the BIG EAST Conference, and has not played the Red Storm since the 2008 season, which resulted in a 1-0 double-overtime win for St. John’s ... The Red Storm are 2-0-0 all-time against the Golden Eagles.
