Official BIG EAST Release

NEW YORK – Marquette University senior John Pothast was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced as part of its final set of weekly awards for the 2016 season. Freshman midfielder Luka Prpa was an honor roll selection as well.

This marked the second career BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week award for Pothast, who finished his career after leading a backline that registered a 1-0 shutout win over DePaul in the regular season finale on Nov. 3. Pothast started all 71 matches for the Golden Eagles during his career, totaling 11 career points on three goals and five assists.

The Lake Zurich, Illinois, native was recently selected to the BIG EAST Second Team after being a preseason All-BIG EAST pick.

Prpa, who also gained postseason accolades, was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year. He was among five mentioned to the weekly honor roll this week after notching his 10th goal of the season in the win over DePaul. After drawing a penalty in the 23rd minute, the Wind Lake, Wisconsin, native stepped up to the spot and converted his fourth PK goal of the season for the eventual game-winner.

The freshman midfielder earned the league's Freshman of the Week award three times during his debut season, as well as a BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honor and several national awards.
