Men's Soccer Earns Share of BIG EAST Title
Nov. 9, 2013
MILWAUKEE - For the second time in three years, the Marquette University men's soccer team has earned a share of a BIG EAST regular season championship the Golden Eagles learned late Friday evening.
Marquette (10-5-2 overall) ended up with a 6-2-1 mark in league play and finished tied with co-champion Georgetown for first place atop the BIG EAST table each with 19 points. MU won a share of the Blue Division championship in 2011, its first BIG EAST title since joining the league in 2005.
The Hoyas (13-4-1, 6-2-1 BIG EAST) defeated Marquette 1-0 in overtime at Valley Fields back on Oct. 26 and therefore own the tiebreaker over the Golden Eagles. As a result, Georgetown is the top seed in the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship and receives an automatic bye into the semifinal round, as well as second-seeded MU.
Both Marquette and Georgetown await the results of Tuesday's BIG EAST quarterfinal matches to learn their opponent for next Friday's semifinals, which along with Sunday's championship game, will be played at PPL Park (home of Major League Soccer's Philadelphia Union) in Chester, Pa. Call 1-877-218-6466 or visit pplpark.com for tickets (see pricing info at the bottom of the page).
Georgetown will play in the first semifinal match on Friday, Nov. 15 (5 p.m. Central time / 6 p.m. Eastern) and will take on the winner of the No. 5 Creighton at No. 4 Providence. No. 2 Marquette will play in the nightcap scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT (8:30 p.m. ET) and will face the winner of No. 6 Butler at No. 3 Xavier.
The two teams that advance out of the semifinal round will square off in the tournament championship on Sunday, Nov. 17 (11:30 a.m. CT) in a nationally televised match on FOX Sports 2 (check with your local cable or satellite provider regarding channel lineup).
