Trio of Men's Soccer Players Earn Weekly Awards
Nov. 10, 2014
MILWAUKEE -- Marquette University men's soccer student-athletes Louis Bennett II, Alex Sjoberg and Charlie Lyon all garnered weekly BIG EAST recognition following a 4-0 win over DePaul in the regular season finale this past Friday.
Bennett II, a sophomore midfielder, powered Marquette's offense against the Blue Demons, registering three points, to earn BIG EAST Conference Offensive Player of the Week. After recording his team-leading sixth assist just before halftime in the 43rd minute Friday, Bennett II came out firing in the second half scoring his fourth goal of the season in the 48th minute.
Monday's award marks Bennett II's first appearance on the weekly award list this season and the first weekly award of his career. The Shorewood, Wisconsin, native becomes the first Golden Eagle to earn an offensive award from the BIG EAST this season.
Senior defender Axel Sjoberg reclaimed the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season, his first since Sept. 22. His efforts against the Blue Demons helped Marquette secure its ninth clean sheet of the season limiting DePaul to just two shots on goal.
Sjoberg's stellar play from his center-back position also allowed him to assist on Marquette's first two goals of the match Friday night. The Stockholm, Sweden, native now ranks third on the squad with three assists this season.
After closing his ninth shutout of the 2014 season, senior goalkeeper Charlie Lyon claimed his fourth weekly BIG EAST award and his third honor roll mention. Friday's victory over DePaul marked Lyon's 29th career shutout, a feat that now makes him the all-time leader in Marquette history in shutouts.
The trio's effort helped Marquette secure a berth in the BIG EAST tournament. As the sixth seed, the Golden Eagles travel back to Washington, D.C. to face Georgetown on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. Central time in a quarterfinal matchup.
