Marquette, Mallace Garner Major BIG EAST Men's Soccer Awards

MILWAUKEE -- Marquette University senior Calum Mallace took home BIG EAST Conference Midfielder of the Year honors, head coach Louis Bennett and his staff was awarded Coaching Staff of the Year and C. Nortey earned a spot on the All-Rookie team, the league announced Thursday at its annual awards banquet in Short Hills, N.J.
Mallace, who was also MU's lone All-BIG EAST First Team selection, led the Golden Eagles with six assists and added three goals en route to a 12-point senior season. He is MU's active leader in points, game-winner goals and career starts. He was a member of the All-BIG EAST Second Team in 2010.
Marquette won its first-ever BIG EAST Blue Division championship with a 7-2-0 league record in Bennett's sixth season as head coach. MU finished three points ahead of runner-up Connecticut in the divisional standings and defeated four nationally ranked teams en route to a 9-8-2 overall record, including a third consecutive berth in the conference postseason tournament.
The Golden Eagles were selected to finish sixth in the Blue Division in the 2011 preseason coaches' poll. Bennett is assisted by associate head coach Stan Anderson, assistant coach Steve Bode and volunteer assistant Marcelo Santos.
Nortey was one of three MU players to play in all 19 games as a freshman. He was the lone unanimous BIG EAST All-Rookie Team honoree. His nine goals led the team and his 20 points on the season ranked fourth in the BIG EAST. He was twice named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week during the 2011 season.
