Marquette captured a share of the 2013 BIG EAST Conference regular season championship. With a total of 19 points in league play, the Golden Eagles finished in a first-place tie with the Georgetown Hoyas, each with identical 6-2-1 records in conference matches.

It marked the second title in three years for MU, which earned its first BIG EAST (Blue Division) title in 2011. Georgetown was awarded the top seed in the 2013 BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship by virtue of a tie-breaker with Marquette; the Golden Eagles lost to visiting Georgetown 1-0 in overtime at Valley Fields back on Oct. 26. The top two seeded teams (Georgetown and Marquette) both received a bye into the BIG EAST semifinals.

Butler advanced to the semifinal round with a 1-0 win at third-seeded Xavier in the BIG EAST quarterfinal round Tuesday night. It was Butler's second win in four days over the Musketeers, as the Bulldogs closed out the regular season last Friday, Nov. 8 with a 2-1 home victory over Xavier in the final match of the regular season to earn the sixth and last spot in this year's BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship.

Redshirt sophomore C. Nortey tallied the golden goal in the 107th minute to lift Marquette to a 3-2 double-overtime victory over the visiting Butler Bulldogs at Valley Fields in the Golden Eagles' BIG EAST home opener back on Oct. 9. It was the first match against the league newcomers since the 1994 campaign. MU owns a 3-1-0 all-time advantage over Butler in a series that dates back to the 1990 season.

Marquette is making its fifth consecutive appearance in the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship and second straight appearance in the semifinal round at PPL Park. The Golden Eagles earned their first trip to the postseason in 2009 since they joined the league (2005). MU's first-ever appearance in the semifinals last season resulted in a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Georgetown. Head coach Louis Bennett is 3-4-1 all-time in BIG EAST tournament games.

The winners of Friday's semifinals will meet in the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship Final on Sunday, Nov. 17 (11:30 a.m. CT / 12:30 p.m. ET) at PPL Park in a match that will be nationally televised on FOX Sports 2.
