Men's Soccer Announces 2017 Team Awards

Nov. 29, 2017

MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men’s soccer team recently capped the 2017 season as head coach Louis Bennett and his staff presented team awards at the annual end-of-the-year dinner.

The annual awards dinner recognized the team’s leaders and top performers on-and-off the pitch during the 2017 season, providing an opportunity to thank all the program’s support staff involved throughout the year.

Redshirt junior Grant Owens earned the Golden Boot Award after leading the team with five goals in 2017. The O’Fallon, Mo., native played all over the pitch, showing his versatility and giving Bennett an asset to work around a myriad of injuries.

Sophomore midfielder Luka Prpa was voted on by his peers as the winner of the Players Choice Award for the second straight season. Prpa finished the year with a goal and five assists for the Golden Eagles.

Redshirt senior Jack Alberts was presented this year’s Scholar-Athlete Award after earning a degree in mechanical engineering and recording a cumulative 3.75 GPA over his five seasons. The Hinsdale, Ill., native was voted the CoSIDA Academic All-District team along with teammates Daniel Szczepanek and Prpa.

Most Improved Player went to sophomore Noah Heim, who made six start in his debut redshirt freshman season. He made 24 saves on the season and recorded his first career victory against Creighton at home on Oct. 25.

Manuel Cukaj, who was the lone freshman to make the All-BIG EAST Rookie Team was also named Marquette’s Rookie of the Year. The Mannheim, Germany, native emerged as one of Bennett’s top backline defenders in 2017.

Man of the Year is presented to the student-athlete that provided a resounding impact on-and-off the field and it was awarded to redshirt senior and co-captain Daniel Szczepanek. The Grayslake, Ill., native capped an outstanding career with 67 career appearances, having never missed a game. He tallied a pair of goals this season to finish his career with six career tallies to go along with five assists.
