Dec. 8, 2011
MILWAUKEE - Marquette senior midfielder Calum Mallace was among the 52 NCAA Division I college seniors Major League Soccer invited to its 2012 Adidas MLS Player Combine held Jan. 6-10, 2012, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Coaches and technical staffs from all 19 MLS clubs, including 2012 expansion side Montreal Impact, will be in attendance to scout the top talent at the 17th annual player combine. Invitees were selected by a panel of college coaches in conjunction with MLS coaches and technical staffs.
The combine prepares players for the MLS SuperDraft on Jan. 12, 2012, in Kansas City, Mo.
Mallace, who had three goals and six assists for Marquette and was named BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year in 2011, joins 11 other BIG EAST seniors as invitees to the prestigious event hosted by the top league in American professional soccer.
Originally from Scotland, Mallace came to Marquette in 2008 and helped orchestrate a turnaround of the program that culminated in a BIG EAST Conference Blue Division championship this past season for the Golden Eagles. Mallace finished his Marquette career with 39 points, including 13 goals and assists.
For the eighth consecutive year, the MLS SuperDraft will be held in conjunction with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Convention, on Jan. 12, 2012, at the Kansas City Convention Center. The first round of the SuperDraft will be broadcast live on ESPN2 beginning at 11 a.m. Central time.
This year, the MLS SuperDraft will include two rounds and 38 overall selections, with the Montreal Impact selecting first overall.
The next eight selections are from teams that did not qualify for the 2011 MLS Cup Playoffs beginning with the team with fewest 2011 regular season points (3 points per win, one point per tie). The remaining eight positions are ranked by fewest regular season points among the teams that were eliminated in the same round of the MLS Cup Playoffs.
A four-round Supplemental Draft will take place on Jan. 17, 2012.
