The Marquette University men's tennis team (0-1) opened the 2015 dual match campaign with a 6-1 loss at No. 49 Minnesota (1-0) Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at the Baseline Tennis Center.

The nationally ranked Gophers featured three top-125 players in their singles lineup, led by senior Leandro Toledo at the No. 1 position. Senior Vukasin Teofanovic gave the 17th-ranked player all he could handle, but eventually dropped a touch 7-5, 7-6 decision.

The lone Golden Eagle to claim a victory was freshman Andre Romanello, who outlasted Mathieu Froment in a tiebreaker at the No, 6 spot. Romanello posted a 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 victory and now owns a share of the team lead with eight singles wins in 2014-15.

The Gophers opened the match by claiming the doubles point, posting wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions over Marquette. In accordance with the new ITA guidelines regarding dual match format, doubles sets are now played to six and Minnesota was able to earn a pair of 6-2 wins.

The Golden Eagles return home on Jan. 23 when the team hosts IUPUI at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium at 6 p.m. CT.
