The Marquette University men’s tennis team (1-0) opened the dual match portion of its 2009-10 campaign with a convincing 7-0 victory over Western Illinois (0-1) Saturday afternoon at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

The Golden Eagles swept all three doubles matchups and didn’t drop a set in singles action en route to the win. Saturday’s action marked the first of 11-straight matches at home to begin the dual match season.

“Overall I was happy with the way we played for our first match,” head coach Steve Rodecap said. “We got off to slow starts in doubles and then we were able to settle down and pull ahead. We have talked a lot about concentration and I felt we didn’t have many lapses in singles.”

Marquette’s lineup included three newcomers, including freshmen Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley and Otavio Perim. Sophomore transfer Jose Manuel Munoz also saw action for the Golden Eagles, who didn’t drop more than three games in any one set.

Senior Mark Rutherford defeated WIU’s Jeff Cote by a score of 6-2, 6-2. The matchup marked Rutherford’s first at the No. 1 singles position since his freshman campaign in 2006-07.

Rutherford and Gutierrez Crowley earned an 8-2 victory at the No. 1 doubles position as the Golden Eagles claimed wins at all three spots.

MU returns to action on Jan. 30 when the team hosts Chicago State and IUPUI.
