The Marquette University men’s tennis team (1-0) opened its 2015-16 dual match campaign Friday night with a 5-2 victory over IUPUI in non-conference action at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

MU opened the match by claiming the valuable doubles point. Juniors Kristiyan Trukov and Nick Dykema made quick work of their opponents at the No. 2 spot and sophomore Andre Romanello and junior Mackenzie Stearns clinched the point with a narrow 6-4 decision at the No. 3 spot.

Freshman Alvaro Verdu and senior Daniel Fernandez also pulled out a 7-6 victory at the No. 1 position to sweep all three doubles matchups.

Verdu picked up the first dual victory of his collegiate career with a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot to push Marquette ahead 2-0. Fernandez quickly followed with a straight-set win of his own and Dykema clinched the team victory at No. 5.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, Jan. 29 when the team hosts South Dakota State at 2 p.m. CT.
