The Marquette University men’s tennis team (1-1) opened the home portion of its 2011-12 dual match campaign with a 6-1 victory over IUPUI (1-3) Friday evening at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium in non-conference action.

The Golden Eagles opened the match by claiming the valuable doubles point. Junior Jose Carolos Gutierrez Crowley and sophomore Dan Mamalat posted an 8-6 win at the No. 1 position, but the Jaguars were able to claim an 8-4 decision at No. 2 to make the point come down to the freshman tandem of James Stark and Cameron Tehrani. After jumping out to a quick lead, the tandem was forced to withstand a furious rally before claiming a dramatic 9-8 victory.

“I was really happy with the way the guys competed, especially the freshman,” head coach Steve Rodecap said. “We talk about having nine opportunities (six singles, three doubles) to win each match and tonight we were able to claim seven victories, so we are headed in the right direction.”

Marquette moved ahead 2-0 when Gutierrez Crowley made quick work of IUPUI’s Nick Volz at the No. 1 singles spot, posting a 6-0, 6-1 win. Sophomore Logon Collins followed suit and earned a straight-set 6-1, 6-0 over junior Armaan Choudary at the No. 5 spots.

Also claiming singles wins for Marquette were senior Jonathan Schwerin and freshman Vukasin Teofanovic.

Marquette returns to action against Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. CT when the team hosts UIC.
