The Marquette University men’s tennis team (2-0) opened a busy weekend with a 7-0 non-conference victory over South Dakota State (0-3) Friday afternoon at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

The Golden Eagles will face Indiana on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT and VCU at 10:30 a.m. CT on Sunday in Bloomington, Ind.

Marquette opened the match by quickly claiming the doubles point. Junior Mackenzie Stearns and sophomore Scott Christian claimed a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 position and the duo of senior Daniel Fernandez and freshman Alvaro Verdu clinched the point with a 6-3 decision at No. 1.

Fernandez moved MU ahead 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 1 spot over SDSU’s Henrique Pereira. Junior Nick Dykema followed Fernandez’s lead with a straight-set victory at No. 4 and freshman Greg Anderson clinched the team victory with a 7-5, 6-1 decision at No. 6. The Tucson, Arizona, native, who transferred from TCU in mid-January, was making his Marquette debut Friday afternoon.

Also claiming singles wins for Marquette were Stearns, sophomore Andre Romanello and Verdu.
