The Marquette University men’s tennis team (1-2) dropped a 6-1 non-conference decision at No. 50 VCU (6-1) Friday afternoon in Richmond, Va.

The loss was the second against a nationally ranked opponent for MU. The Golden Eagles fell 6-1 at No. 49 Minnesota in the dual opener on Jan. 17. Marquette will wrap up its weekend road swing at No. 34 Virginia Tech at 12 p.m. CT on Saturday afternoon.

VCU opened the match by claiming the valuable doubles point, posting 6-2 and 6-3 decisions at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively.

The Golden Eagles were able to claim the first set in multiple singles encounters, but only junior Daniel Fernandez was able to secure a win. He defeated VCU’s Joseph Cohen 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot and is now 6-4 overall and 2-1 in dual outings.
