Feb. 6, 2016
The Marquette University men’s tennis team (3-2) picked up a non-conference victory Saturday afternoon, defeating Bethune-Cookman 4-1 in Ft. Myers, Fla.
The Golden Eagles, who were playing outside for the first time this season, won the doubles point and claimed three singles victories to secure the team win. MU will face FGCU Sunday morning to wrap up its weekend trip to Florida.
“I was really happy with the way we played in doubles and the guys battled in some tough matches,” head coach Steve Rodecap said. “We got off to a slow start in singles, but the team was able to respond and turn multiple matches around.”
Marquette claimed the doubles point thanks to a hard-fought 7-5 win by senior Daniel Fernandez and freshman Alvaro Verdu at the No. 1 spot. MU also received a win from the tandem of junior Kristiyan Trukov and freshman Greg Anderson at the No. 3 position.
Anderson and junior Nick Dykema made quick work of their opponents at the No. 6 and No. 4 positions, respectively, with both players posting straight-set wins. After a Bethune-Cookman win at No. 1, Verdu clinched the win with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 decision over Walid Gtari at the No. 2 spot.
