MU Opens Road Swing With 6-1 Setback At No. 56 Michigan State

The Marquette University men’s tennis team (4-2) opened a weekend road swing with a 6-1 loss at No. 56 Michigan State (9-0) Friday night in East Lansing, Mich.
MU sophomore Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley improved to 5-1 in dual match action with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 decision over MSU’s Denis Bogatov to claim Marquette’s lone point in the match. The Golden Eagles dropped one other three-set match at the No. 3 position and freshman Dan Mamalat fell in a tiebreaker at the No. 2 spot.
The Spartans, who have yet to leave their home courts this season, swept all three doubles matchups to post an early 1-0 advantage.
Marquette will conclude its weekend on the road on Saturday morning when the team faces fellow BIG EAST member Notre Dame at 10 a.m. in East Lansing, Mich. The Fighting Irish is currently ranked 25th in the nation and the roster features four players ranked among the top-125.
Friday night’s outing marked the start of a five-match road swing for Marquette.
