MU Downs Toledo 6-1, Rodecap Earns Wins Record
Feb. 17, 2018
The Marquette University men's tennis team (6-2) posted a 6-1 non-conference victory over Toledo (1-6) Saturday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium and with the decision, head coach Steve Rodecap became the program's all-time leader in career wins.
Rodecap, in his 15th year with the team, now owns 204 wins and has led the squad to 11 winning seasons and three-straight trips to the BIG EAST Tournament championship match during his tenure. The win over the Rockets allowed him to pass Willie Cakans (1979-1993) for the top spot all-time. Cakans finished his career with a 203-145 overall record.
Marquette's first season of competition came in 1951-52 and the program has featured six head coaches.
The Golden Eagles claimed the doubles point against Toledo for the 1-0 advantage and quickly earned a trio of straight-set singles decisions to claim the team point. Sophomore Brandon Shanklin earned the team's fourth point with a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 4 to secure the notable Marquette win.
Marquette is undefeated (6-0) at home this season and returns to action on Saturday, Feb 24 when the squad hosts South Dakota State at 6 p.m. CT.
