Feb. 19, 2011

The Marquette University men’s tennis team (4-5) dropped a 5-2 decision at No. 51 Clemson (10-2) Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

Freshman Thibault Troude was the lone player to claim a singles victory for Marquette, posting a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 decision over Clemson’s Juan Bolona at the No. 6 position.

Marquette opened the match by claiming the valuable doubles point. Senior Jose Manuel Munoz and junior Jonathan Schwerin claimed an 8-6 win at the No. 1 position and after a Clemson victory at No. 3, the doubles point fell on the shoulders of sophomore Jose Manuel Gutierrez Crowley and freshman Dan Mamalat. The duo was able to hold off a late Tiger rally and eventually posted a 9-8 decision.

Clemson is the fourth-straight nationally ranked opponent on Marquette’s schedule. The team also faced No. 56 Michigan State, No. 25 Notre Dame and No. 40 Wisconsin. MU took on No. 33 Minnesota in the 2011 dual match opener.

The Golden Eagles will wrap up a five-match road swing Sunday afternoon when the team faces Furman.
