Feb. 22, 2009
The Marquette University men's tennis team (7-3) returned home to the Helfaer Tennis Stadium Sunday afternoon and claimed a pair of non-conference victories, downing Eastern Illinois and South Dakota State.
"I was really happy with the team's performance up and down the lineup," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "I thought the freshmen took advantage of the opportunity to get some match experience and each was able to have a positive contribution."
Marquette's trio of freshmen combined to participate in a total of eight singles and doubles victories on the day. Newcomers Drake Kakar and Jonathan Schwerin each collected two singles wins and classmate J.T. Christian earned a dual match victory at the No. 6 position against SDSU.
The Golden Eagles opened the day with a 7-0 decision over the Panthers. MU dropped just one decision, falling 8-7 at No. 1 singles, earning straight-set singles wins at each of the six positions.
MU capped the afternoon with a 7-0 victory against the Jackrabbits. The team swept all three doubles matches and didn't drop more than two games in any of the singles sets.
