The Marquette University men’s tennis team (5-5) claimed a 6-1 victory over Northern Illinois (10-5) Wednesday night in non-conference action at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

The Golden Eagles opened the match by claiming the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Freshman Greg Anderson and junior Kristiyan Trukov clinched the point at No. 3, posting a 6-1 decision. The MU duo of juniors Mackenzie Stearns and Nick Dykema also claimed a victory.

After NIU tied the score 1-1 with a win at No. 4, Anderson and senior Daniel Fernandez rattled off straight-set wins at the No. 6 and 1 positions, respectively. Anderson earned a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Kevin Daun and he is now 4-4 in dual action since transferring from TCU.

Freshman Alvaro Verdu earned the team victory with a 6-4, 7-5 win at the No. 2 spot and he is now 5-4 on the season in dual competition.

Also claiming singles wins for MU were Trukov and Dykema.

Marquette returns to action on Saturday, March 5 when the team hosts Eastern Illinois at 12 p.m. CT before opening a six-match road swing.
