Marquette Claims 4-2 Win Over Northern Illinois

The Marquette University men's tennis team (6-6) claimed a 4-3 victory over Northern Illinois (8-3) Thursday night in non-conference action at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

MU opened the match by claiming the doubles point to move ahead 1-0. Senior Vukasin Teofanovic and junior Daniel Fernandez made quick work of their duo, posting a 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot. Sophomore Nick Dykema and freshman Andre Romanello clinched the point with a narrow 6-4 decision at No. 2.

Fernandez pushed MU ahead 2-0 with a 7-5, 6-4 win at the No. 1 singles spot. He recovered from a slow start and won the first set after trailing 4-1 to NIU's Simon Formont. He is now 12-7 on the year and 8-4 in dual competition, including a 4-0 mark at the top spot.

After NIU tied the match at 2-2, sophomore Mackenzie Stearns pushed MU ahead 3-2 with a 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 win at No. 6. The victory was the second of the season for Stearns in dual action.

Romanello clinched the team victory with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 win at No. 5 and improved to 13-9 on the year in singles play.

The Golden Eagles open a five-match road swing at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 7 at Denver in the squad's next match.
