No. 72 MU Edges NIU 4-3 In Non-League Play
March 6, 2014
The No. 72 Marquette University men’s tennis team (9-4) edged Northern Illinois (10-4) 4-3 Thursday night in non-conference action at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
The Huskies, who defeated the Golden Eagles 4-3 in 2012-13 in Milwaukee, were previously coached by current MU program mentor Steve Rodecap.
The Golden Eagles opened the match by claiming the valuable doubles point. The No. 1 tandem of senior Dan Mamalat and junior Vukasin Teofanovic posted an 8-3 victory over its opponent from NIU and the duo of senior Logon Collins and freshman Nick Dykema clinched the point with an 8-4 win at No. 2. Mamalat and Teofanovic are now 10-2 in dual matches this season.
The Golden Eagles moved ahead 2-0 after Teofanovic made quick work of NIU’s Axel Lagerlof at the No. 2 spot, winning 6-3, 6-2. Teofanovic is now 8-4 in dual action this season and 5-1 at the second position.
Mamalat pushed Marquette ahead 3-1 with a tough 7-6, 6-4 win over NIU’s Frederic Cadieux at No. 1. The Philadelphia, Pa., native improved to 14-5 overall and 10-2 in dual action with the victory.
The match would come down to the No. 6 position after a pair of NIU singles wins and fell to the shoulders of freshman Kristiyan Trukov. The Gurnee, Ill., native got off to a quick start and didn’t drop a game in the first set. NIU’s Carlos Manzanas turned the tables in the second and eventually won in a tiebreaker. Trukov was able to pull ahead in the third, however, and eventually posted a 6-0, 6-7, 6-3 match-clinching victory at No 6.
Marquette will return to action next week when the squad heads to Las Vegas for its annual spring trip.
