MILWAUKEE - Senior Eigis Vedrickas led the Marquette men's tennis team in the opening day of the Marquette Invitational at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The men advanced two players to the semi-finals set to begin tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.

Vedrickas earned two quick wins in singles, first against Northern Illinois' Adam Ford, 6-0, 6-4, the second against UW Green Bay's Mark Goldin, 6-0, 6-1.

"I felt really good today," Vedrickas said. "We played a lot of tennis last weekend and our goal this week was to get plenty of rest. We took a day off and then practiced hard for a few days."

Freshman Eric Fleming was the only other Golden Eagle to win both singles matches. He first took down Northern Illinois' Sean Hayes, 6-3, 6-1, and then defeated Will Wang of DePaul, 6-2, 6-4.

Mario Lopez played well again coming off a strong weekend at the Wisconsin Fall Invite. Lopez defeated Eric Hines, 6-3, 7-5 in the first round. He then fell to NIU's Diego Balloon, 6-1, 6-4.

The Golden Eagles had success at doubles, winning two of the three matches. The duo of Ian Kawas and Ricky Servoss defeated the Blue Demon team of Will Wang and Jack Komar, 8-6. Van Lieshout and Fleming also were successful against NIU's Hayes and Hines, 8-2.
