March 8, 2012
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's tennis team jumped out to an early lead but couldn't hold on as Michigan State won four singles matches to top the Golden Eagles, 4-3, Thursday evening at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
The Golden Eagles won two of three double matches to claim the first point of the night. The No. 1 duo of Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley and Dan Mamalat had their way with Drew Lied and Aaron Pfister, 8-1, while Logon Collins and Jon Schwerin held on for an 8-6 win over Austin Brooks and Harry Jadun at No. 2.
The Spartans evened the score following Giji Linders' 6-2, 6-2 win over Cameron Tehrani at No. 6 singles, but Mamalat gave the lead back to MU (2-1) when he defeated Denis Bogatov, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 2.
Vukasin Teonfanovic's win at No. 4 (7-6, 7-6) was sandwiched between two Michigan State wins at No. 1 and 5, leaving the match to be decided at No. 3.
Collins took the first set, 6-3, but Ronnie Hulwicz answered with a 6-4 win in the second set. Collins fought hard after being down 5-2 and rallied to tie the third set, 5-5, but Hulwicz won the final two points for the match and team win.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action March 15-17 at the USD/SDSU Spring Invitational.
