Marquette Drops Tough 4-3 Loss At Old Dominion To Conclude Road Swing
March 13, 2009
The Marquette University men's tennis team concluded its four-match road swing with a tough 4-3 loss to Old Dominion (14-9) Friday afternoon in non-conference action.
The squad's East Coast spring trip also included stops at Brown, Harvard and Hampton. MU will return to action on Saturday, March 21 against Valparaiso, which marks the first of four-straight at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
Marquette got off to a good start against the Monarchs, claiming the doubles point with wins at the No, 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively. Senior Stephen Shao teamed up with junior Dusan Medan to earn an 8-4 victory and junior Mark Rutherford and freshman Jonathan Schwerin did the same at No. 3.
Unfortunately, MU was able to claim just two of the six singles matchups. Shao and Rutherford captured decisions at No. 4 and No. 5, but it wasn't enough to secure the win. Medan dropped a tough 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 decision to Tobias Fanselow of ODU at No. 2 and teammate Niko Boulieris was also able to force a third set at No. 3, but Matt Fawcett was able to post a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory.
The matchup against the Monarchs marked the first time this season MU has claimed the doubles point, but failed to earn the team victory.
