Men's Tennis Falls at No. 48 UC Irvine, 4-3

IRVINE, Calif. - The Marquette men's tennis team got singles wins from Niko Boulieris, Otavio Perim and Jacob Straus, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Eagles fell 4-3 at No. 48 UC Irvine Sunday afternoon at Anteater Tennis Stadium. The loss puts Marquette at 11-4 overall. The Anteaters came away with the doubles point after winning two of three doubles matches to take the early 1-0 lead. The No. 2 doubles tandem of Jonathan Schwerin and Mark Rutheford took down Sam Gould and Khunpol Issara, 9-7, for MU's lone doubles win of the day. UC Irvine went ahead 3-0 with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles before Marquette earned wins at No. 3 and No. 4 to come within a point, 3-2. Perim defeated Stephen Sage, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4 and Boulieris downed Shimpei Suzuki, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3. The Anteaters clinched the victory with a win at No. 6 as Issara pulled out a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 win over Schwerin. Straus defeated Ryan Mayer 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 5 for MU's final point of the match. The Golden Eagles will continue their West Coast road trip on Tuesday, March 16 against Marist in Los Angeles, Calif. No. 48 UC Irvine 4, Marquette 3 Singles
