Charleston, S.C. - A day removed from coming up short, 4-3, at South Carolina State, the Marquette men's tennis team rallied in singles play to defeat The Citadel, 4-3. Senior Eigis Vedrickas, sophomore Greg Sirotek and freshman Trent Hagan and Stephen Shao all picked up singles wins in the Golden Eagles victory, but it was Sirotek who clinched the win at no. 6 singles.

"This is one of the better matches I have been apart of during my time at Marquette," said head coach Steve Rodecap. "This was the first match this season where we came back to win the match after losing the doubles point. We trailed the whole match and didn't have it won until the very end. Overall the guys fought hard and came out and battled after yesterday. It was a total team effort."

The Citadel won the doubles point with wins at the first and second doubles positions. Daniel Dossetor and James Eason took an 8-6 win over sophomores Brett Binkley and Pete Van Lieshout at no. 1 doubles, while the no. 2 doubles tandem of Vedrickas and senior Ian Kawas fell to David Lara and Nick Medica, 9-8 (4). Marquette got one doubles victory from Shao and Hagan who teamed to defeat Ananda Sawmynaden Derek Jose, 8-7 (5), at no. 3 doubles.

In singles play, the Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead as Sawmynaden downed Kawas, 6-3, 6-2, but the Golden Eagles rallied and earned consecutive wins at no. 5 singles and no.1 singles to even the score. Shao got Marquette on the board first with a convincing straight set win over Medica, 6-3, 6-3, at no. 5 singles. Vedrickas then took a hard fought decision over Dossetor, 7-6 (4), 6-2, at the top singles spot.

Binkley was edged by Lara at no. 4 singles in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, giving the Bulldogs a short-lived edge. At no. 3 singles, Hagan earned a thrilling victory at no. 3 singles, handing James Eason his first loss in 12 matches, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Sirotek won the match for the Golden Eagles at the last singles spot defeating Derek Jose in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.

"As a freshman Trent played extremely well and closed out a match against a guy who has had the success he has had this season. Then it came down to Greg at six singles. He was composed and believed in himself. Eigis also played well at no. 1 singles. He was down 5-2 and then came back to win the match in straight sets," added Rodecap.

The Golden Eagles will close out their spring break road trip with a match against Illinois State on Friday, March 17, at 1 p.m. EST.
