Marquette Defeats Xavier 5-2 In League Play

The Marquette University men's tennis team (8-8) picked up its first win against a BIG EAST Conference opponent Saturday afternoon, downing Xavier (9-4) 5-2 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Golden Eagles will conclude their weekend conference road swing at Butler on Sunday morning with an 11 a.m. CT first serve against the Bulldogs.

MU opened the match by claiming the doubles point, winning at the top-two positions. Senior Vukasin Teofanovic and junior Daniel Fernandez clinched the point with a narrow 8-7 win at the No. 1 spot. The tandem is now 8-2 on the year, with all of the action coming in dual competition.

The team managed to earn wins in four of the six singles contests to secure the team victory. Sophomore Kristiyan Trukov, who now leads the squad with 17 singles wins, clinched the decision with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 decision at the No. 4 spot over XU's Michael Moe.

Also earning singles wins for Marquette were Fernandez, sophomore Nick Dykema and classmate Mackenzie Stearns.
