Marquette Edges Butler 4-3 On The Road
March 22, 2015
The Marquette University men's tennis team (9-8) concluded its weekend BIG EAST Conference road swing with a 4-3 victory over Butler (4-11) Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Golden Eagles also defeated Xavier 5-2 on Saturday afternoon.
For the second day in a row, sophomore Kristiyan Trukov clinched the team victory for MU. The sophomore held off Butler's Pulok Bhattacharya 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 4 position. Trukov leads the squad with 17 singles wins and also teamed up with freshman Andre Romanello to earn a win at No. 3 doubles versus the Bulldogs.
Marquette found itself down 1-0 after doubles play. Butler claimed narrow wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots to earn the valuable point. Fortunately for MU, junior Daniel Fernandez, sophomore Nick Dykema and sophomore Mackenzie Stearns were all able to secure wins in singles play. The trio each collected straight-set wins and allowed Trukov to play the role of hero.
The win over the Bulldogs wrapped up a five-match road swing for MU, which returns to action on April 11 when the squad hosts Youngstown State to being a four-match homestand at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
