Marquette Rallies For Home Victory Over Xavier

The Marquette University men’s tennis team (12-8) rallied for a 4-3 victory over Xavier (9-9) Saturday afternoon at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

Saturday’s match marked the first of four-straight to conclude the regular season against fellow BIG EAST Conference opponents. MU will also take on DePaul (4/12), Creighton (4/18) and Butler (4/20) prior to the league tournament April 24-27 at the US National Tennis Center.

Xavier narrowly claimed the doubles point, earning wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. MU’s top duo of senior Dan Mamalat and junior Vukasin Teofanovic dropped an 8-6 decision and the Golden Eagles were edged 8-7 in a tiebreaker at the No. 3 spot.

Freshman Nick Dykema quickly got MU on the board with an impressive 6-1, 6-1 decision at the No. 4 spot. Marquette wasn’t done there, rattling off three more victories in quick succession to clinch the team victory. Junior Cameron Tehrani, Teofanovic and Mamalat all posted straight-set decisions.

With the victory, the Golden Eagles improved to 9-0 on the year at home.
