Marquette Drops Tough 4-3 Decision To Toledo To Open Homestand
April 1, 2011
The Marquette University men's tennis team (11-9) opened a four-match homestand Friday night with a tough 4-3 loss against Toledo (20-8) at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
The loss was the first in seven home matches this season for the Golden Eagles and marked the ninth-straight win for the Rockets, who also defeated Green Bay earlier in the day.
Trailing 1-0 after doubles, freshman Thibault Troude put Marquette on the board with a 6-2, 7-5 win over UT's Leo Sarria at the No. 5 position. After watching the Rockets move ahead 3-2, sophomore Otavio Perim held off Gursher Harika 6-4, 7-6 to tie the score at 3-3. That left the match-deciding point to come from the winner at the No. 1 spot. MU Sophomore Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley and Toledo's Aleksandar Elezovic battled for nearly three hours on the featured court, with Elezovic claiming a hard-fought 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 decision to claim the team victory.
The Rockets opened the match by claiming the valuable doubles point, earning wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The MU tandem of Troude and Perim was able to post an 8-4 win over its opponents from Toledo at the No. 3 spot.
Marquette continues its homestand April 9 when the team hosts Detroit at 12 p.m. CT.
