The Marquette University men’s tennis team (10-9) completed a weekend sweep of BIG EAST opponents at Helfaer Tennis Stadium, defeating Xavier (7-6) Sunday afternoon 6-1.

MU also downed fellow league member Creighton 6-1 Friday afternoon.

Marquette rallied to claim the hard-fought doubles point for the early 1-0 advantage. After splitting decisions at the No. 2 and 3 positions with the Musketeers, MU clinched the point with a 7-5 decision. The tandem of junior Nick Dykema and senior Daniel Fernandez trailed 4-1 in its matchup at No. 1 before earning the come-from-behind decision.

Freshman Greg Anderson moved MU ahead 2-0 with a straight-set win at No. 5 singles and after Xavier claimed a victory at No. 4, sophomore Andre Romanello posted a 6-3, 7-6 result at No. 6 to give Marquette a 3-1 lead.

Newcomer Alvaro Verdu clinched the team win, courtesy of a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Xavier’s Jeremy Schneider at No. 2. Doubles partners Dykema and Fernandez also were victorious in singles action. The Golden Eagles will wrap up their three-game homestand on April 16 when they host Butler.
